Assistant Professor

Carolyn graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology with Honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. At Stanford Carolyn was a member of the lightweight women’s rowing team. Carolyn then came to UCSF for Medical School and while a student served as a Carbon Neutrality Initiative Fellow to advance the UC system’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2025. She stayed at UCSF for her residency in Internal Medicine and was a member of PRIME (Program in Residency Investigation Methods and Epidemiology). During her residency training Carolyn served as Co-Chair for the Residency Wellbeing Committee and received a Commendation for Exceptional Volunteerism and University Service from UCSF as a member of the “Connecting During Covid” team that used iPads to facilitate communication between patients and their families during visitor restriction policies. Carolyn chose to stay at UCSF in our HPM Fellowship and agreed to join the DPM as faculty!

During residency Carolyn completed a research project examining patient and caregiver experiences of telehealth in the SMS with Dr. Kara Bischoff and this year is again working with Kara on a project to describe the characteristics of patients with ALS pursuing the EOLOA. Carolyn also has an interest in narrative medicine and has published three narrative pieces in Pulse Voices and McSweeney’s. Carolyn will care for patients in the OPCS, SMS and the inpatient PCS. She is interested in supporting patients and their caregivers to align their medical care with their values. Outside of work Carolyn enjoys spending time in nature and with her family, including dog Hugo and young daughter.
