The Neuropalliative Care Training Pathway is designed for clinicians seeking specialty-level expertise in clinical practice, education, and research in palliative care for serious neurologic illness. Graduates are equipped with the clinical skills, scholarly foundation, and professional network to lead neuropalliative programs across the country.

Who Should Apply

We see individuals who:

  • Aspire to work in or create an academic neuropalliative care program
  • Seek specialty-level expertise in palliative care for serious neurologic illness
  • Are committed to improving the care experience of patients, families, and providers across the spectrum of serious neurologic illness

Curriculum

Neuropalliative fellows complete the HPM Fellowship clinical curriculum, infused with unique clinical experiences described by the American Academy of Neurology Neuropalliative Care Curriculum, including:

  • Longitudinal neuropalliative continuity clinic
  • Neuropalliative-specific elective exposure across neurology subspecialty clinics, inpatient neurology services, procedural clinics (e.g. pain, sialorrhea, spasticity), and long-term care settings such as Laguna Honda Hospital and the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living
  • Participation in the UCSF Neuropalliative Care Program, including clinical, educational, and research-based projects

Didactics

Fellows participate in the HPM Fellowship didactics  and engage in the educational initiatives of the UCSF Neuropalliative Care Program. Neuropalliative fellows also have access to educational programming through the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, the International Neuropalliative Care Society, and the American Academy of Neurology.

Scholarly Project

Fellows will complete a scholarly project focused on contributing to the field of neuropalliative care. Fellows receive mentored support and have ample opportunities for collaboration through the UCSF Neuropalliative Care Program. Projects are commonly related to clinical research, medical education, quality improvement, or health equity, with goal of local or national dissemination.

Leadership and Career Development

Fellows are paired with a primary faculty advisor with extensive experience in neuropalliative care. This advisor supports the fellow in:

  • Assembling a neuropalliative mentorship team
  • Career development toward joining or building a neuropalliative program
  • Connection to existing local, regional, national, and international neuropalliative networks

How to Apply

We seek individuals who demonstrate exceptional promise and commitment to the field of neuropalliative care. Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency and meet all HPM fellowship eligibility requirements.
